Modern Hospitality Playbook: What to do the moment one trial reel beats the rest (and why the winning number is smaller than you're expecting). I often hear you guys say your trial reels are stuck in the hundreds. 300 views, then 200, then 80. After a few weeks of that, the whole exercise starts to feel like a waste of time. One of our clients, a Palm Springs account, sat right there for months. It has three hotels under one brand, so we pushed out batch after batch of trials, all of them in the hundreds of views. Then one hit 15,000. We recreated it, posted it to the main grid... And it ended up doing 560,000 views. For a long time, we waited for a reel that looked impressive before we promoted it to the gridIt's the instinct almost every operator has:
The thing is, a winner is relative. The only comparison that means anything is the one against the reels you posted before and after it. Once you accept that, the job stops being "wait for a hit" and becomes "spot the outlier." Here's how we do trial reelsStep 1: Judge against your own last ten. Line up your recent trials and find the highest number. If everything sat at 200 and one did 800, that's your winner, and the absolute number is almost irrelevant at this stage. Step 2: Start analyzing at 48 hours. Two days is the first checkpoint. Check again at 5 to 7 days, 14 days, and 30 plus, because Instagram keeps re-serving trial reels while it works out who your page is for. Plenty of our reels found their audience on the fourth or fifth attempt. Step 3: Count the engagements before the views. One of our advisory members ran a campground reel that did 2,000 views. It also did...
The modern traveler saves and follows on purpose, so those actions tell you more than 10,000 passive views would. Step 4: Promote it one of two ways. First way is to open the reel, tap "Manage trial reel", and hit "Share to everyone". That pushes it to your grid and your followers. Or the other way is rebuild it from scratch, post it as a new reel, and leave the original running in trials. For newer accounts, we rebuild. Because promoting to the grid ends the experiment. Rebuilding keeps the original one out hunting for cold audiences, while the new version gets tested against your followers. You learn two things instead of one. (Quick tip: the reel you thought wouldn't perform is often the one that wins. One of our members made a reel he called "genuinely ugly". It's still his best-performing piece of content.) Back to Palm Springs, and months of views stuck in the hundreds…Let me pull back the curtain behind that 560,000-view reel: Here's what promoting the outliers produced:
Every one of those started as a couple of hundred views that looked like nothing. Takeaway: Open your account this week and find the highest number in your last tenThat's your winner, whatever the number says. Then rebuild it on your main grid, leave the original running, and let the outliers tell you where to go next. It's a better signal than your gut, and it's the only one that ends in bookings. -- Ben Wolff P.S. To spot and promote an outlier, you first need enough reels for one to stand out. That's the whole reason Brian and I keep coming back to the Single-Shot Reel. The topics come out of conversations you're already having, you shoot it on your phone, and you edit it in minutes. We're breaking down the format live this coming Thursday, September 3, then helping you build your next one with you on the call. Come live and you'll also walk away with:

Modern Hospitality Playbook: How to find the bookings you lost at checkout (and the choke points you'll catch only by going through it yourself). When we launched the booking engine at Onera Wimberley, we had a problem. The page showed guests a price with a long string of decimals trailing off the end of it. The problem is, nobody will enter a card number on a page that doesn't tell them what it costs. The dropoff from that page wasn’t flagged in a report. A guest didn’t write in about it. We...
Modern Hospitality Playbook: How to test reels on completely cold audiences before anything touches your main grid (and the two numbers that keep you posting). I often hear you guys say that the hard part of content isn't the footage. You've got the clip: a hot tub looking out at the mountains with the sunrise coming up behind it. Then you sit there and your brain goes blank on what to text to put across it. I feel you. Finding the words is the easy half. The blank page happens because each...
Modern Hospitality Playbook: How a viral post shrinks your booking window (and the real-time pricing move that turns the surge into ADR.) You post a reel. It takes off. The views climb, the saves stack up, and it feels like the marketing finally worked. Most of us screenshot it, drop it in the team chat, and get back to the day. Here's what that reaction misses. A viral post does something to your calendar before it ever shows up in your revenue. One reel at one of our properties pulled 1.7M...
